Driveway Installers Across Buckinghamshire

FirstScapes is a family-run landscaping company. We install new driveways and replace existing ones across south Buckinghamshire and the Chilterns.

A drive carries more weight than any other part of your garden. What decides how long it lasts is mostly out of sight: the dig, the sub-base, the edging and where the rainwater goes. On the Chilterns the ground is often clay-with-flints, which holds water, while the chalk valleys drain freely, so the groundwork is sized for your plot.

We lay the surface and build everything around it, so one team handles the whole front of the house.

What Our Customers Say

  • Placeholder review. A real Google review from a FirstScapes customer appears here once the Google connection is set up. Most reviews run to two or three sentences, about this long.

  • Placeholder review. Google shares up to five reviews and the page shows three. Longer reviews are cut off after eight lines with the full text on Google, so the cards stay a tidy height even when a customer writes a lot about their new garden, the team and how the job went from start to finish.

Surfaces

Choosing a Driveway Surface

Six surfaces, each with its own look and upkeep. We will help you pick the one that suits your house and your ground.

  • Herringbone block paved driveway in warm red tones with a charcoal border, in front of a brick house

    Block paving driveways

Concrete or clay blocks on a bed of sharp sand over a compacted sub-base, locked together with kiln-dried sand. Hard-wearing and easy to repair: if a section sinks, the blocks lift out and go back. Herringbone is the strongest pattern where cars turn.

  • Resin bound path in a light stone mix with red brick edging, running between a lawn, bedding plants and clipped shrubs

    Resin bound driveways

Natural stone mixed with clear resin and trowelled flat. Smooth, with no loose stones, and water drains straight through, which helps meet the planning rule for front gardens. It is laid over a sound base, usually new tarmac or concrete.

  • Grey resin bonded driveway with a textured stone finish in front of a brick house and garage

    Resin bonded driveways

Resin spread over the base with loose stone scattered on top while it is wet. The result is a textured, gravel-like finish with good grip. It is not permeable, so drainage is planned in, and a few stones come away over time.

  • Black tarmac driveway with a grey block paved edge, leading to a brick house and garage, with planted borders on both sides

    Tarmac driveways

Hot-laid asphalt, rolled in layers over a compacted base. Quick to lay and copes well with heavy vehicles. It needs a firm edge of kerbs or setts to stop the sides crumbling, and can soften slightly in its first hot summer.

  • Golden gravel driveway edged with granite setts, curving past a lawn to a white rendered house

    Gravel and shingle driveways

Free-draining, suits period and rural houses, and the crunch tells you when someone arrives. Laid properly over a membrane and compacted sub-base, often in stabilising grids, with a firm edge so it stays on the drive.

  • Grey pattern imprinted concrete driveway with a slate-effect finish, running up to a front door

    Concrete driveways

Poured on site over a compacted base, usually with steel mesh, and finished brushed, smooth or pattern imprinted. Very strong and low upkeep. It needs expansion joints to stop cracking, and a drain or soakaway for the rainwater.

FAQ

Driveway Questions from Buckinghamshire

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway in Buckinghamshire?

Not if the surface is permeable, such as gravel, permeable block paving or porous asphalt, or if the rainwater is directed to a lawn or border to drain naturally. You do need permission to cover more than five square metres between the front of the house and the road with an impermeable surface that does not drain to a permeable area. Different rules apply to flats and maisonettes, and where an Article 4 direction or a planning condition removes these rights. See the Planning Portal guidance on paving a front garden.

What do I need for a new dropped kerb in Buckinghamshire?

A vehicular access licence from Buckinghamshire Council. Before you apply you need planning permission, or a letter from the council’s Planning Team confirming you do not need it. The access can be no wider than 4.6 metres, and the kerb must be lowered by a contractor with a New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 qualification. See Buckinghamshire Council’s dropped kerb licence page. A new front wall, fence or gate next to the road, or its footpath, can be no more than one metre high without planning permission (Planning Portal rules on fences, gates and walls).

Which towns do you cover for driveways?

We install driveways in High Wycombe, Beaconsfield, Amersham, Marlow, Chesham, Hazlemere, Great Missenden, Gerrards Cross, Chalfont St Peter and Chalfont St Giles, and the villages in between. Pick your town below for local advice.

How long does it take to install a new driveway in Buckinghamshire?

It depends on the size of the drive, the surface you choose and how much of the old drive has to come out. Once we have measured up, your quote includes a timescale, so you know how long we will be on site before we start.

What types of driveways does FirstScapes build in Buckinghamshire?

We build block paving, resin bound, resin bonded, tarmac, gravel and concrete driveways in Buckinghamshire, along with the edging, dividing walls and sealing that go with them. You can compare them in the section above.

Can FirstScapes extend or replace old driveways in Buckinghamshire?

Yes. We take out old, cracked or sunken driveways and lay a new one on a fresh sub-base, and we can extend an existing drive to fit another car. If you are widening the entrance, you may also need a dropped kerb approved by Buckinghamshire Council.

How much does it cost to build a driveway in Buckinghamshire?

It depends on the size, the surface you choose and the ground underneath. We need to measure it up and look at the site before we can give you a price, so we offer a free, no-obligation quote. Call 01494 812249 or use the form at the top of the page.

Planning guidance correct as of 28 September 2026. Rules change, so check with Buckinghamshire Council before you commit to anything.
